Hi!  I'm Mac.  I only have one eye...

I was born mid-January 2025 and was healthy and strong from the start.  However, shortly after I opened my eyes, my mom noticed my right eye looked a little different.  She didn’t worry too much as newly opened eyes often look gray and cloudy.  As days passed, she realized that it actually reflected light differently than my other eye and by about 7 weeks old, she could see that the right eye was larger and bulging a bit.

My mom made an appointment with the local vet and thankfully, I was able to be seen the same day.  The attending veterinarian was very thorough and noticed that my pupil was not normal and the pressure in my eye was high.  The vet prescribed drops to control the pressure and my mom made an appointment with a Canine Ophthalmologist.  The appointment with the specialist showed reduced pressure in my eye.  She decided to prescribed another medication to see if together the pressure would continue to improve.  Thankfully, my eye improved exponentially.  At this point, the goal was to have me continue to grow as much as possible before having my eye removed. The specialist suspected it was melanoma, but added it was a very rare thing to find in a puppy as young as me.

After pressure checks on my eyes every three weeks, fast forward to 5 months old, and I was progressing in every way.  Developmentally, I was on track with the other puppies my age and my mom said I was as sweet and smart as they come.  But, she noticed my eye beginning to look larger than before.  She consulted with my regular vet and together decided that my eye needed to come out sooner rather than later.

One day before I turned 5 months, I had my eye removed.  It was far more traumatic for my mom and dad than it was for me.  I never even skipped a beat.  Once those stitches were out, I was raring to go and haven't stopped since.  I love playing with the other dogs, swimming, and going for walks.  I know sit, down, stand, paw, I'm crate trained and house trained.  I sit by the door when I need to go out.  I have good house manners and love to lay down and chew on a toy, or lay down by my mom or dad wherever they are. Their hope is that eventually I will be able to be a therapy dog at hospitals, for cancer patients, especially children.  I have happily settled into my home as part of the pack, but should the perfect home/situation arise for me, my mom would consider placing me.  In the meantime, my bills and surgery were a bit cost prohibitive, so my mom is selling baked goods and t-shirts to help cover those expenses.  Thanks for reading my story.  I'm so glad to be enjoying life!
